BoOzy' OS and the Cristal Gem (also known as The Cristal Gem)[1] (French: BoOzy' OS et la Gemme de Cristal, also known as La Gemme de Cristal[2]) is a 2013 French animation short film based on the French animated television series BoOzy' OS, and directed, written, scored by and starring its creator J.K. Arsyn, going by the name of Ken Arsyn. It was produced by RED ƎYE Productions and co-produced and distributed by CreaSyn Studio.

The film was first released at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival on April 14, 2013. It was presented during the Dailymotion, Cartoon Network Studios and Annecy international event "+ de courts! Online animation film contest by Annecy", and arrived first.[3]

The film title refers to the Annecy award named "the Annecy Cristal" (le Cristal d'Annecy).[2]

Plot[edit]

BoOzy' OS, a muscular caveman, is seeking the "Cristal" of Annecy.

Themes[edit]

The film parodies video game characters such as Earthworm Jim, Sonic the Hedgehog, Doctor Robotnik and Mario as well as animated Disney films like Aladdin, The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast. The Cristal Gem also heavily parodies most of J.K. Arsyn's movies, such as Cow Hard and Stop-and-Cop.[4]

Cast[edit]

  • J.K. Arsyn as BoOzy' OS / Mari' OS / OSmic the Hedgeh' OS / SkoOlet' OS / Rob' OSmic / PoOlet' OS (voice);
  • Georges Colazzo as Victor Chai (voice).

Reception[edit]

Critical response[edit]

The Cristal Gem received mixed reviews. AllMovie gives the film three stars out of five.[5]

The World Film Carnival Singapore gave The Cristal Gem seven stars out of ten, saying that "the animation short film has the potential to become a symbol for curating socio-literary theories in this post-humanistic or post-positivist era."[6]

Despite a main character who seems "quite odd, and perhaps even caricature-esque" to him, Ben Rider from The Monkey Bread Tree in London calls The Cristal Gem as "a wild film" and "a wonderful production": "To be honest, this is one of the most fun animation films we’ve had at TMBT."[7]

In Romania, the Filmstrip International Film Festival gave a more mixed opinion: "There is an obvious effort to cram so much story into this five-minute short that one has a hard time following it", but "The final act deserves special praise as it has several surprises that make the whole story better." According to the FIFF, "J.K. Arsyn should be applauded for trying to do something different."[8]
